ลักษณะของกล้วยนวล

ต้นกล้วยนวล มีเขตการกระจายพันธุ์กว้าง พบได้ตั้งแต่ประเทศอินเดีย เนปาล พม่า จีนตอนใต้ และในภูมิภาคมาเลเซีย รวมไปถึงนิวกินีและฟิลิปปินส์ด้วย ส่วนในประเทศไทยจะพบได้ทางภาคเหนือ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ภาคตะวันออก และทางภาคใต้ เป็นกล้วยลำต้นเดี่ยว ไม่มีไหล น้ำยางเป็นสีเหลืองอมส้ม จัดเป็นไม้ล้มลุกที่มีกาบใบกลายเป็นลำต้นเทียม ลำต้นเทียมมีจุดสีดำม่วงกระจาย ลักษณะเป็นรูปทรงกระบอก มีความสูงของต้นประมาณ 5-6 เมตร มีขนาดเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลางของต้นประมาณ 30-50 เซนติเมตร โคนต้นกว้างอวบใหญ่ ส่วนกาบลำต้นเป็นสีเขียวและมีนวลหนาสีขาว ไม่มีหน่อที่โคนต้น ต้นกล้วยนวลสามารถพบได้ทั่วทุกภาคของประเทศ เป็นไม้ล้มลุกที่เจริญเติบโตได้ดีในดินร่วนระบายน้ำได้ดี และขยายพันธุ์ด้วยวิธีการใช้เมล็ด

ใบกล้วยนวล ใบเป็นใบเดี่ยว ลักษณะของใบเป็นรูปรียาวขอบขนาน ปลายใบยาวคล้ายหาง ส่วนโคนใบมีลักษณะเป็นรูปลิ่ม ใบมีขนาดกว้างประมาณ 50-60 เซนติเมตรและยาวประมาณ 1.4-1.8 เมตร แผ่นใบเกลี้ยงเป็นสีเขียวเข้ม ส่วนท้องใบมีนวลหนา ก้านใบยาวเป็นสีเขียวนวล และมีร่องเปิดที่เส้นกลางใบ ส่วนก้านใบสั้นดอกกล้วยนวล ออกดอกเป็นช่อขนาดใหญ่คล้ายระฆังห้อยดิ่งลง โดยปลีมีใบประดับขนาดใหญ่สีเขียวเรียงสลับ และชิดติดกันตั้งแต่โคนจนถึงปลาย ช่อดอกหรือปลีมีลักษณะเป็นรูปกรวย ยาวประมาณ 2.5 เมตร มีใบประดับเรียงซ้อนเหลื่อมกัน มีนวลติดทนอยู่ด้านใน แต่ละใบมีประมาณ 10-20 ดอก โดยดอกเพศผู้จะอยู่ช่วงปลาย ส่วนดอกเพศเมียหรือดอกสมบูรณ์เพศจะออกบริเวณช่วงโคน กลีบรวมที่เชื่อมติดกันยาวประมาณ 2.5 เซนติเมตร ที่ปลายมี 3 หยัก กลีบรวมที่แยกเป็นรูปหัวใจสั้นกว่ากลีบรวมที่เชื่อมติดกัน ที่ปลายเป็นติ่ง

ผลกล้วยนวล ผลอยู่รวมกันเป็นหวีภายในปลี ผลเป็นผลเดี่ยว ลักษณะของผลเป็นรูปรีสั้น ๆ และมีสันตามยาว ผลมีขนาดกว้างประมาณ 3 เซนติเมตรและยาวประมาณ 6 เซนติเมตร ภายในผลมีเนื้อเยื่อบาง ๆ และมีเมล็ดสีดำขนาดใหญ่ ผิวเรียบและแข็งมาก มีขนาดเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลางประมาณ 1-1.2 เซนติเมตร
